History of the Hayes

Ally contemplates the 100-year-old journey of what we now know as Hayes Valley

In the mid to late 1800s there was a sweep of land owned by Colonel Thomas Hayes. After taking possession of the land, he built a ginormous white house located where Davies Symphony Hall is today. At this time, the only other soul in this area was the Yerba Buena cemetery. This area soon became a respite for visitors passing through who needed libations and kindness, so he named it Traveler’s Rest, what we know today as Hayes Valley. Continue reading

On Sundays I head three blocks down the street to the local farmers market for my weekly supply of sustenance. The air seems cleaner when the market is in the neighborhood; it could also be the powerful smell of Lilies permeating the air. Allergies and discerning personal scent aversions can cause many people to shy away from this breathtaking flower, but I relish in it. I pay homage to the heirlooms, give an approving nod to the homemade lobster ravioli, satiate my fruit craving with a basket of strawberries and circle back around, stopping at the juice stand.
