Ally contemplates the 100-year-old journey of what we now know as Hayes Valley

In the mid to late 1800s there was a sweep of land owned by Colonel Thomas Hayes. After taking possession of the land, he built a ginormous white house located where Davies Symphony Hall is today. At this time, the only other soul in this area was the Yerba Buena cemetery. This area soon became a respite for visitors passing through who needed libations and kindness, so he named it Traveler’s Rest, what we know today as Hayes Valley. View full article »
